Evidence of Indecency

Evidence of Indecency
Private documents from historical criminal files of homosexual people

The exhibition Beweise für die Unzucht presents materials and documents confiscated by the Austrian police in the course of the criminal prosecution of homosexual women and men between 1900 and the end of the criminalisation of „Unzucht wider die Natur” (unnatural fornication) in 1971. What was once an expression of intimacy and personal freedom (love letters, private photographs, diaries, everyday notes, harmless keepsakes) was turned into incriminating evidence by the intervention of the state. These documents were never intended for the eyes of others, neither for the police, nor for historians, nor for the visitors of an exhibition. They stand for profound violations of privacy and mark moments in which people lost their safety, their self-confidence, their dignity and their personal integrity.
